Success is NOT execution, success is NOT production, success is NOT consumption - success is whatever we want it to be!

I often hear this idea that success "is all about execution" -- like here:

They aren’t wondering whether your product can be built – they are wondering whether you can build it.

IMHO, this is false. It is based on an old-world production model -- one in which "supply creates it's own demand". I'm not saying that this maxim (Say's law) is wrong from a theoretical point of view, but rather that it is inefficient: If we have to produce something before knowing whether it is wanted or not, then that probably means that many things will be produced only to be scrapped.

Therefore, the onus of success lies not solely on the production of goods + services -- but rather also on their consumption.

If a movie is a produced and is also a box office hit, does that mean it's a success? How about a tank that rolls into a city to suppress a popular uprising? Dropping a bomb on the moon? What about the daisy someone picked presented to you as a gift? The life support system or palliative healthcare?

These examples are supposed to show that demand is by no means simple or straightforward -- and the "value" of any good or service is shared by both those who wish to produce it as well as those who wish to "consume" (or "use") it. Moreover: It should be quite obvious that different people have different tastes. If I choose to eat an apple, what does that say about the orange? Nothing!

It's not about execution. It's not about production. It's not about consumption. It's about whatever people agree on.
